Atyrau Region

The town of Atyrau was founded in 1640 by a Russian trader, Gureev whose name bore it until 1992. Before oil was discovered during the Soviet era the regions main source was caviar. Regions population is 455,900 made up of  79.5% Kazakhs, %15 Russians, Ukrainians, Tatars, Koreans, Germans and Belarusians. The regional capital city is the city of Atyrau with a population of 144,700.

Geography

Atyrau Region stradles the northern coast of the Caspian Sea. It covers an area of 118,600 sq km. The length of the regions frontiers from north to south is 350 km and spans over 600km from west to east. The Volga River seperates it from Russias Astrakhan Region in the west, Western Kazakhistan Region to the north, Aktyubinsk Region to the east and Mangistau Region to the south east where it eventually meets the northern part of Ustyurt Plateau and shores of the Caspian Sea. Atyrau is over 2,600km west of Almaty and lies on the banks of the Ural River. Ural River flows through the middle of the city and one side is Asia and the other side Europe.

Economy

The economy of the region is steadily gaining momentum. One of the overall gross domestic product of the economy, the fuel and power accounts for 69%, chemical  industry 5% and agriculture 20%.The leading sectors of the industry are oil mining, refinery, chemical and fishery.
